SCHOOL project WORK WITH KIDGATE PRIMARY ACADEMY, LOUTH

During the course of our Louth Market Heritage Project, we worked closely with the children and staff at Kidgate Primary Academy in Louth. We wanted to raise the young people’s awareness of the market and its history, and also inspire them to create art around their own visions of the market past, present and future.

One of the main sources of creative inspiration was a very unusual architectural feature of the market seen in this archival photograph: the old fountain or tap with its obelisk-like form and repeated circle design.

The children were fascinated by this mysterious object from their town’s past. We encouraged the to create their own interpretations of it and also imagine what might take its place in the future.

Year 4 pupils worked over a series of weeks to produce textual work inspired by the old fountain, with artist Jayne Cooper Clark.
