louth market
A TALE OF THEN AND NOW
There are “points in the geography of a community where time and space intersect and fuse. Time takes on flesh and becomes visible for human contemplation; likewise, space becomes charged and responsive to the movements of time and history and the enduring character of a people.” Bakhtin.
Using money raised by National Lottery players, The National Lottery Heritage Fund supports projects that connect people and communities with the UK’s heritage.
The Louth Market Heritage Project has been made possible with The National Lottery Heritage Fund. Thanks to National Lottery players, Spectrum Arts have been able to work with Louth Museum to run year-long project, with the aim of engaging local people in exploring and celebrating the rich and varied heritage of Louth market.
traders
Outdoor market traders play a significant role in the social fabric of the United Kingdom, fostering community connections and contributing to local economies.
As purveyors of fresh produce, records, cowhides, curry, dishcloths and other diverse merchandise, they create vibrant spaces that bring people together, encouraging face-to-face interactions and a sense of shared experience.
As part of the project, we’ve collected Polaroid portraits and sound recordings of some of Louth market’s current traders, who have been very generous with their time.
then
Louth market has a rich history, which has been well documented over the years in paintings, photographs and film. We have worked closely with Louth Museum in particular to explore and showcase some of their excellent collection.
With the contributions of many local people and organisations, we have collated a wonderful, vibrant archive of images and film, which celebrates the rich heritage of Louth market.
The project is ongoing and we would like to showcase even more photographs and film of the market. Please get in touch if you have any interesting old photos, film, video or stories that you'd to share.
